SHE IS BACK!

This Christmas our favourite Disney nanny, Mary Poppins, returns - this time though, actress Emily Blunt will be taking over the role that made Julie Andrews famous in the original 1964 film. With direction by Rob Marshall and screenplay by David Magee, the trailer gives us that Christmas feeling and a glimpse of Blunt singing one of the new songs —  and the classic, ’supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’. With this year marking Disney’s 90th anniversary it seemed the perfect opportunity to explore what’s been happening behind the scenes and tell you why Emily Blunt is the perfect casting for "Mary Poppins Returns"!

Set in London, 25 years after the events of the original film, the highly anticipated sequel shows Mary Poppins helping the next generation of the Banks family after they experience a tragic personal loss. Mary revisits Jane and her brother Michael, who is now the proud father of three: Anabel (Pixie Davies), Georgie (Joel Dawson), and John (Nathanael Saleh). The American musical fantasy film follows a storyline that will ensure the sequel boasts the same magical elements. Disney summarized it as: "In depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael's three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives."

Last year, British-American actress Emily Blunt mentioned to E!News that she actually has character traits just like Mary: "I think I did have a 'nerdgasm' when I put on the costume. Sandy Powell designed the costumes, which are stunning," she raved.

"I love that Mary Poppins is vain and stylish and into herself; it was enjoyable to sashay around in Sandy Powell's creations." As for her take on the role, she said, "I needed to try to pay homage to Julie Andrews, but carve out a new space for myself—and we were very loyal to the books."

This is a sequel of the original movie, so we shouldn’t be expecting the same kind of story. Blunt differs from Julie Andrew’s role back then. While we will definitely get the feelof the original Mary Poppins, Blunt will switch into a more edgier, rougher role as instead of being inspired by newer versions of Disney’s productions, Emily focused more on the original Mary Poppins books where the character had slightly more strict, rigorous characteristics. She unveiled to the media:

"We were loyal to the books. I think she's a little more acerbic and vain and weird in the books and we went that direction a little more." It you have read the original books written

by P.L. Travers you will be ready for the more assertive, authoritative and tough Mary Poppins set to hit our screens. However the love, magic and fun musicality are all still there to remind us why we fell in love with this character all those years ago.

A cast of award winning actors/actresses such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep and Dick Van Dyke make this Mary Poppins adventure feel like anything is possible.
